Just off Harrison Avenue on E. 11th Street in downtown Panama City, something really is cooking. Somethin’s Cookin’ offers a bistro, a bakery and a store, all in one. Hannelore and Bill Holland, the husband and wife owners, have created a place where guests feel right at home. With an open kitchen and a small number of tables, a vast variety of wines, freshly baked bread, imported cheeses, and succulent menu items that are all made from scratch, the bistro-style restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating, and the freshest “made from scratch” meals such as sandwiches on freshly made bread, beautiful quiches, salads, and wonderful soups – in my opinion you can be assured of receiving the finest that Panama City has to offer. For those with specific dietary needs, there is a range of gluten-free products, too. Even more, if you have no time to wait, there is a wide selection of takeaway items available with advice on the right wine or side dish.

Hannelore Holland has been involved in fine foods in Bay County since she first started giving cooking lessons in the back of the Holland Hallmark store near the old Marie Hotel. In 1972 she opened what would eventually become Somethin’s Cookin’, now at 93 E. 11th Street.

The most popular items on the menu include their freshly made squash soup and crab cake salad. Their Lemon Grass Chicken soup is a favorite healthy choice along with the bistro salad. If you do not have enough time to sit for a meal, among the most popular of their takeaway foods are the Cove Chicken Salad and the Casablanca Salad.

If you need gluten free foods, Somethin’s Cookin’ has you covered, too! A wide selection of soups such as lentil and senate white bean, salads and even gluten-free bread, which can be used on any of the fresh made sandwiches are available… Even gluten- free desserts are made in-house; cheesecake, crème caramel, chocolate soufflé and even a chocolate torte! Healthy (and decadent) choices abound at Somethin’s Cookin’.

And there is also a warm and inviting store with fine gifts, cookbooks, cutlery, and a great selection of domestic and imported wines and ingredients. Hannelore’s selection of cookware and chef’s tools is unrivaled locally. If all of this is not enough, Hannelore Holland also offers a variety of cooking classes taught by her and local chefs, along with Friday night wine tastings presented by her husband, Bill.

So forego the supermarket and make a trip downtown, Hannelore and her staff will be happy to help you discover fine, fresh food all over again.
