ARCHITECTURE CONTRIBUTES TO OUR COASTAL LIFESTYLE
What brought me to Northwest Florida originally, in 1982, was the fact that Destin was an up and coming resort community with interesting developments such as Seaside in its early stages and many plans for future growth. There were opportunities to design challenging projects along the coast.
When I drove into Destin for the first time, in the evening and under the moonlight, I thought there were huge snowdrifts along the sides of the road. I had just driven down from Colorado. Of course, it was sand. The area appealed to me on a personal and aesthetical level, even when Hurricane Opal destroyed the sand dunes in 1995.
I have been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to help shape architecture and landscapes in Northwest Florida in the last 30 years. Drawing inspiration from history, indigenous buildings in the general surroundings of the project and from clients’ ideas, thoughts, needs and hopes, our architectural designs echo their surroundings.
From concept to completion, projects and processes have not changed much throughout the years except for a heightened awareness for the environment and the advancement of technology. With eco-friendly construction methods and technology that supports energy efficiency, today’s architec- tural designs offer smart living and a smaller carbon footprint in harmony with nature.
I have always enjoyed my work, as it gives shape to clients’ ideas and goals. In resort communities, residents want more than just the basic ‘shelter.’ They are attracted to the coastal lifestyle and it is our mission to help them live their best life.
Hurricane Michael is giving residents and businesses a chance for a new start with the opportu- nity to come back bigger and stronger. Living along the coast, we will always be threatened by hurricanes. It has been this way in the past and can be expected in the future. With that said, the opportunities here are worth the risk.
At Prescott Architects, we offer designs that withstand the test of time and focus on the best aspects of coastal living. We are looking forward to talking with you about your ideas.
