BALANCING HEALTH, FITNESS, WELLNESS, AND BEAUTY

By Rebecca Smith

I consider myself a healthy person. I try to make good choices when eating and really like good food and indulgences.

Growing up, I can remember my father always saying that all things are best in moderation. This rule very easily applies to food. However, I live by this rule for everything. I truly believe it is one of the main reasons I am healthy.

I was diagnosed with asthma when I was three years old and have taken medications for it my entire life. Doctors thought I would grow out of it, as most juvenile asthmatics do. But I did not. I am lucky in that my asthma is controlled and I rarely have attacks.

Taking care of my whole body is important to me. After taking an anatomy class, I became fascinated with how our bodies are like a universe themselves. Everything works independently but affects everything else. So, when making health decisions, I consider the body as a whole.

A daily goal of mine is to do at least 30 minutes of yoga. Unfortunately, I do not always have the time for it, but yoga is a game-changer for me. Not only does it offer physical health, it provides mental calmness for me.

My mind is extremely active, which is a part of my personality. This is why I like the quiet focus I find with yoga.

Wellness—I get this from yoga and the beach. When I have extra minutes, no matter how few they may be, I love to stop at a particular spot on the beach, take my shoes off, and walk to the water. It is calming and helps me recollect my thoughts.

As for beauty, I do not wear a lot of makeup, except for special events, maybe two to three times a year. I stick with mascara, and in the winter months and when I do not have a tan, I will use a little bronzer. I love my long hair and feel like it is best after being in the salt water … beach waves!

I exfoliate once a week and use moisturizing lotion two to three times a week after a shower. I do my own nails, although, right now, they are horrendous from tuning up the JetSurf boards for the season. Have you ever seen a mechanic with nice nails?
