Americana Cafe Sundays at Roberts Hall

BY MICHAEL MCKINNEY

Legendary Texas singer/songwriter Eric Taylor will appear at Roberts Hall in Lynn Haven Friday night, December 5th, for one show only. Presented by local folk duo singer/songwriters Lucky Mud as a part of their Americana Café Series, the performance will be upstairs in the historic music hall where Hank Williams, Sr . played in the late 1940s.

Eric Taylor’s original songs have been recorded by artists such as Lyle Lovett, Joan Baez and Nanci Griffith. As his songwriting skills grew, he began turning his incredible stories into songs such as Dean Moriarty, Whooping Crane, Hemingway’s Shotgun and Deadwood.

One of Taylor’s students in his writer’s workshops, Lyle Lovett, included Taylor’s Memphis Midnight/Memphis Morning on one of his albums. “Eric was a real teacher for me,” Lovett says. “I learned so much from the way he structured a song, and I’d try to learn his songs within days of hearing them.”

Two years ago, Lovett recorded Taylor’s Whooping Crane, and his upcoming album includes Taylor’s Understand You. Lovett sings Memphis Midnight/Memphis Morning as a duet with Taylor on Eric’s newest CD. Eric Taylor said about that CD, “I always wanted to wait till I had a big bag of songs and choose the ones I wanted on a record, but this’ll be a little different. I want a little blood on the bone on this record.”
