Kayla Caspary – Bliss

Bliss by Kathryn Littlewood is one of my favorite books. I like this book because it is full of mystery and magic and will make you laugh out loud. It is the first in a series of books that will entrance and captivate you.

This book is about Rosemary Bliss and her family’s secret cookbook, the “Bliss Cookery Booke.” It includes recipes for many magical treats. The Bliss family sells some of these magical treats in their bakery. Those who eat the treats feel better. Rosemary and her brothers and sister are supposed to keep the cookbook safe. The cookbook is to be kept in a vault inside their house and the key for the vault is shaped like a whisk.

All is well until one day. While her parents are away, “Aunt” Lily arrives. The kids have never heard of her.  Aunt Lily explains she is the descendant of Albatross Bliss and they are descendants of Albatross’s brother, Filbert. The two brothers had a fight a long time ago and since then all the descendants have been enemies. Aunt Lily explains that she has come to mend the broken family bond and makes them a special dinner and dessert.  The dessert has magic in it that prevents the kids from telling their parents about this mysterious “Aunt.”

To impress her, the kids make truth cookies and love muffins.  As people in the town eat these treats, the kids realize they have made an error in their recipe and many wild and fun adventures unfold.  The kids give out cake that accidentally makes everyone in the town fall asleep. Another time, the kids give everyone an “upside down inside out cake” and everyone in town is now walking backwards, speaking backwards and doing everything backwards.

Aunt Lily is fun and helpful and makes
everyone feel good. Little do the kids know that Aunt Lily was not sent to the bakery to mend the broken family bond.  She came to steal the family’s magic cookbook. Bliss and the rest of the series will send you on a wild adventure.  The author’s exciting and energetic storytelling style will keep you turning pages, oblivious to the outside world.
