New Baby Dolphin at Gulf World

At 1:30 pm today, October 25th, Mia a nine year old Bottlenose Dolphin gave birth to a spunky female baby. Mia was born at Gulf World in 2005 and this is her second offspring. All births at Gulf World are special but this one tops them all because this baby is our first attempt at artificial insemination and it worked. For several years we have been training our male dolphins’ seamen collection and our females to voluntary urine collection to track ovulation. Dan Blasko, a partner here at Gulf World has been in charge of training the animals and staff for today’s success. Dr. Lydia Staggs our staff veterinarian supervised todays birthing process and was instrumental in the delivery. We work closely with members of the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquarium and other scientific organizations to stay on the cutting edge of processes like artificial insemination.
