Mexico Beach's pier before Hurricane Michael
Mexico Beach was devastated, robbed of its landmarks with the destruction of the City Pier, the watertower, and with most businesses and homes wiped out.
In March 2019, the area remains in transition. A total of 1,069,682 cubic yards of debris have been picked up in Mexico Beach alone; 2,582 pieces of white goods, 13,900 trees, and 33 cars have also been removed as of mid-April 2019.
Most of the town’s remaining houses are left dilapidated, spilling their building materials onto the ground. Pieces of broken glass, half-buried in the bright white sand, glitter beneath the sun’s rays.
Correction: In our November/December 2018 article “Ground Zero: Mexico Beach,” Panama City Living incorrectly quoted Mayor Al Cathey as having stated that there were 21 deaths in Mexico Beach. The current death toll in Mexico Beach caused by Hurricane Michael is four.
