The Shipyard Grill: The One and Only Dark N’ Stormy

Imagine yourself watching the sun melting into the Gulf at the end of a hot summer day, a tall ice-cold glass in your hand while watching the boats go by. Shipyard Grill has it all; the Old Florida maritime feel, perfect views of St. Andrew Bay, delicious drinks and hearty seafood. Among the long list of Caribbean cocktails is one that stands out in its simplicity – the legendary Dark ‘N’ Stormy, the national drink of the Island of Bermuda. It was first created in the 1850s when British Naval officers in Bermuda were combining Gosling’s Black Seal Rum with ginger beer to combat seasickness. The result was tasty, yet unappealing to the eye – “the color of a cloud only a fool or a dead man would sail under,” a seafarer once said.

Boating and sailing is second nature to the owners of the Shipyard Grill. Daisy D’Isernia describes the drink perfectly, “The black rum contrasting with the ginger beer creates a mellow, sweet, spicy and refreshing taste. Simple, elegant, but not fussy, this drink transports you directly to Bermuda.”
